An interview with Joe Uehlein of the U-Liners! Who and what are your primary musical influences, and why?
Jerry Garcia -- because he was first a banjo player in the early 60's, and even though his career with the Grateful Dead took him to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he never stopped playing folk and roots music, and those influences came through in the Grateful Dead, the Jerry Garcia Band, and all of his projects. How about cultural-political influences?
Doc Watson -- he inspired me to reach beyond my perceived capabilities. He is the greatest!
Woody Guthrie -- he stood with the workers and never wavered. What do you like best about performing? What do you like least? What's the hardest part about it?
Steve Earle -- One of the greatest songwriters of our time, and a deeply committed activist.
Performing is a thrill, and it is pure communication. It doesn't matter if there are twenty people in the audience, or 200 or 2,000 -- to take tones, sounds, and rhythms and mix them together and touch someone, to cause them to feel, think, question -- to move them to live better, love more, hate less -- music is life! The hardest part is the equipment -- setting it up, tearing it down, moving on to the next gig -- that's hard labor; but the making of the music is a wonderful thing! For more info on the Uliners, visit www.uliners.com.
